Male Anchor: People who’ve endured hair loss will tell you it can be embarrassing, devastating, heartbreaking, but new technology is offering hope. It’s non-surgical, non-invasive, and very discreet. This is something you can wear at home. And Pittsburgh is one of the first cities in the country where this is available
Female Anchor: Kym Gable found out how lasers can restore your hair as well as your confidence and self-esteem.
Kym Gable: It’s often called your crowning glory, and we’re bombarded by images of men and women who have it. Healthy, thick, luscious locks of hair. Losing it can be frustrating and heartbreaking, and the clientele at hair loss clinics is getting younger, people like Bill Ainsworth,
Grant Gunderson: Have a seat on the magic black chair.
Kym Gable: a patient at the Hair Restoration Institute in Pittsburgh.
Bill Ainsworth: It’s the only place around that you can actually go and do this without getting something drastic or surgery. In my case, I would have had to wait, you know, 10 years until I actually had actual significant hair loss instead of just noticing the beginnings of it and… and fixing it and catching it while you’re young.
Kym Gable: Bill comes here for low-level laser therapy with the MEP 90, a commercial machine, FDA-cleared to regrow hair.
Grant Gunderson: What the laser does is it increases blood flow and specifically at the follicle levels.
Kym Gable: And after six months, his hairline changed pretty dramatically. But now, a California-based company is unveiling this, the Theradome, a clinical strength laser helmet for home use.
Grant Gunderson: It’s got a little bit better wavelength than the NEP, so it is also going to sit right down on top of somebody’s head, so that there’s not where the EPL stick about an inch above your head. Um this is gonna be right down on top of it.
Kym Gable: For 20 minutes, twice a week, the 82 glowing diodes stimulate the scalp. After 18 treatments, fuller, shinier locks. After 50, hair can start to regrow. So, you’ve, I’m sure, talked to some of your clients about this. How excited are they that this is gonna be a new option for them?
Grant Gunderson: Well, they all think it’s really cool that we’re gonna have something they’ll have at home that will be the same strength as the MEP. We never thought we’d get to that position.
Bill Ainsworth: It is a lot better just to be able to be home instead of drive downtown and do it.
Kym Gable:These photos show clients before and after several months of treatment. First, the hair loss slows and stops, then new hair starts to fill in.
Susan Kettering: Good. I think probably in about six to 68 treatments, your hair should be much healthier, much fuller.
Kym Gable: Susan Kettering is the owner of HRI. She says her female clients are also getting younger.
Susan Kettering: In the past 20 years, there wasn’t any particular reason. But now, it is diet, it is stress, it is uhm hormonal changes, it’s heredity.
Kym Gable: And it’s so devastating that some wear wigs or extensions while waiting for the treatments to work.
Susan Kettering: Hair is big. I don’t care what anybody says. You know, even to lose just a little bit in the front hairline makes her hair style dramatically different.
Kym Gable: And she can’t wait for some of them to try the Theradome at home.
Susan Kettering: I can’t tell you how revolutionary this is and how wonderful it’s gonna be for clients not to have to, you know, go back and forth but in their… in their own home. Commit to it, and… and try to regain your hair.
Grant Gunderson: It’s exciting to watch men get their hair back, while there’s nothing’s as rewarding to see a woman get her hair back and be happy with how she looks again.
Kym Gable: They call it groundbreaking technology for both women and me.
Bill Ainsworth: I just wanted to stay as young looking as possible, for as long as possible.
Kym Gable: That’s laser-focused on restoring what’s been lost. So, that is the Theradome, and it literally just hit the market. So, that is physically the first one you will see just about anywhere. So, Pittsburgh is really on the cutting edge of all of this technology.
So, the question a lot of people are going to ask is “Okay. So, can I just get one of these and… and take it home, and start wearing it, and it’s going to make a difference?” A lot of people are going to do that. However, the experts strongly recommend that you go to a clinic like HRI, get diagnosed, and there are other things that they can do there for you to topically… topical agents, also vitamins that can make the uhm effects of this even, even better. So, wearing that, along with getting diagnosed and finding out exactly what’s causing that hair loss, that’s really important.
Male Anchor:Mm-hmm, because it could be something serious.
Kym Gable:It could be.
Male Anchor:You just want to stress. So, expensive? How much?
Kym Gable:Okay. So, this right now, and I’m told only for the next couple of weeks. This is $595. So, this will set you back about six hundred bucks. However, you know, compared to what people spend, people spend thousands and thousands of dollars trying to restore their hair. So, this is just one of the options you can use at home. And you heard them, they’re really… they really are saying that this is groundbreaking technology.
Male Anchor: Yeah.
Female Anchor: It’s exciting.
Male Anchor: A lot of people would be interested in that.
Kym Gable: Yeah, the Theradome.
Female Anchor: Thank you so much, Kym.
Kym Gable: All right.
Male Anchor: Thanks.
